Assumption, a Cankerworm in the Life of a Peacemaker!
Back up Story;
Dylan and Joyce had a misunderstanding in the class yesterday and Dylan is currently going through a tough time emotionally due to how Joyce treated him mercilessly. In short, he is very depressed.
What happened? Let us find out.
Dylan borrowed a lecture note from Joyce to complete his. Meanwhile, there was supposed to be a test the next day so he promised to return it soon so that Joyce could revise for the assessment.
On getting to his hostel, Dylan got a terrifying call from his mother. He was told his father had been sick and has been moved to the hospital. He got disturbed and confused for few seconds. He eventually picked up his bag and dashed out of his room.
After some hours spent in transit, he got to the hospital tired and worn-out. He located his mother. Dylan could not stand the sight of his sick father who was in coma. He had to stay in the hospital throughout the day running errands to get necessary things for his sick father. His mind was totally disconnected from everything happening in the school environment.
It was getting late and there was no sign that Dylan would leave the hospital that day. He couldn't leave his mother alone to go through the whole stress of running around for his sick father. Suddenly, he remembered Joyce's note! He quickly brought out his phone from his pocket to call Joyce only to realize that his phone had gone off. He felt sad but there was nothing he could do. It happened that Joyce had called him severally but he was not aware due to stress.
Joyce on the other hand was very worried and was boiling with anger. She didn't want to fail. "Where could he be? Why has he not returned my note? What kind of dirty game is this?" She murmured furiously.
Dylan had to pass the night in the hospital with his mother. At around 6am in the morning, he took permission from his mother to excuse himself so that he could go back to school to write his test.
Dylan got to school very late, just when the test was about to start. He rushed to meet Joyce so he could apologize and explain what happened but Joyce didn't give a listening ear. As he got closer, Joyce snapped at him, "how dare you keep my note with you? "You think you're smart and wise! How dare you play on my trust? Oh! You want to pass with my note right? I think I am the fool here because this had happened to me before but I refused to learn my lesson. Listen and listen good, don't ever come to me again to borrow anything. You this idiot fellow! She said as she snatched her book from Dylan's palm.
Dylan's voice ceased for some time and he was overwhelmed with shame and guilt. All eyes were on him. It is obvious that Joyce didn't know he had gone through hell the previous day but she was also unwilling to listen.
Dylan's friends walked up to him to persuade him. He explained what happened to them and they all sympathized with him. He also went to Joyce hostel just maybe she would listen to his apology but Joyce was still very angry and so she didn't give him any attention. Dylan went back to his hostel depressed due to that wrong accusation. His emotion was affected and he felt sad that he was seen as a betrayer.
If Joyce had been calm enough to listen to Dylan's story, perhaps she would not have treated him the way she did.
Similarly, just like Joyce, many of us easily pick needless offense based on assumption.
Assumption is simply an act of jumping at conclusions without facts and figures. It is a dangerous and toxic act which emanates from a troubled and worried mind. A person who assumes is usually too forward to pass the buck and is prone to be judgmental.
It is sad to know that some people even use assumption to spice up their busybody and backbiting business. Meanwhile, assumption does not strengthen any relationship, rather, it destroys it. It is highly destructive especially when it is wrong and in fact, about 90% of our assumptions is always wrong. Wrong assumptions break trust and could result to violence especially when it becomes toxic to the person who is at the receiving end.
"I know what he will do next", " I am very sure of what he will say", "I'm sure he was the one who told my mom". These are statements of an assumer. As much as possible, assumptions are guesses in disguise.
Assumption is an easy task. You know why? All you need to fuel the act of assumption is just an incomplete information and an unwillingness to ask questions. Asking questions when you are confused about things will bring clarity to issues and it will save you the stress of worrying. Avoid filling the blanks with wrong information.
Most people resort to assumption because they think they are very knowledgeable and smart to perfectly assume what other people are up to. However, assumption is never the best resort. Even if you are telepathic and psychic in nature, ensure you avoid assumption by all means.
Assumption most times also reveals defensiveness. For instance, people who have been hurt in the past due to an hurtful experience, when similar things begin to play out, they will want to act like they already know what is going to happen next and so they do something terrible to defend themselves due to fear of the unknown.
What assumption does
Assumption has a way of affecting both the assumer and the recipient. When you assume, the negative energy expressed can take a toll on your own heart and more on the recipient's heart.
Let peace reign! Get your facts!
Be calm enough to ask questions! No matter how angry you are, be patient enough to listen to other people's story!
You will be surprised to realize in the end that what you assumed was just an ordinary guess.
Assumption troubles the mind. Be free from its negative energy.

ReplyDeleteThe point is exactly made. This is cogent and relevant to our society at this time and to the growing generation as ours where patience, love and respect for others are far from sight; where all we care is about "ME", and "MINE" alone.
ReplyDeleteIf we could just think to ask ourselve the question of: "Could anything be wrong, which I must know?", and such like, then, we will be acting in kindness.
Assumption is blind, immature, demoralising, fooling, and dehumanising. It must stop.
So, let the change begin from me; I mean from you and me today.

ReplyDeleteOur premonitions about people's actions can either be wrong or right. When acted upon it might yield unpleasant deep rooted issues if not solve on time. Holding unto the facts should be basis of our actions. We ought to be apt to hear than to speak. Well done Tolu.
